Ingredient spotlight: Sea cucumber

Did you know that sea cucumbers are marine invertebrates in the same phylum (share evolutionary similarity) as starfish and sea urchins? Despite being consumed as a food and health tonic by many cultures, today and traditionally, sea cucumbers are still considered quite the oddity with their peculiar characteristics and unique composition. A case in point is their bizarre means of self-defense.

When threatened, certain species of sea cucumber shoot out their viscera (organs) and entangle predators in a Silly String™ type web.

Bewildering, yet wondrous, is their capacity to regenerate what was expelled with sulfated polysaccharides (fucosylated chondroitin sulfate, glucosaminoglycans, fucoidans), triterpene glycosides, phospholipids, marine collagen, and microfibrils lending support to their dynamic resilience. Peptides, phenolics, essential fatty acids and amino acids, bioactive vitamins and minerals, and carotenoids contribute to sea cucumber’s high nutrient profile and designation as a functional food ingredient.

In awe of their regenerative capacity and unique composition, we crowned sea cucumber our top tier ingredient in Vitality Daily.

Sea cucumber shows broad potential in supporting:

  • Skin rejuvenation
  • Metabolic function
  • Brain health
